LA Galaxy MLS Cup 2014: Where are they now?
By Matt Coles
ST – Robbie Keane – Retired
The 2014 MLS MVP went to the LA Galaxy’s Robbie Keane, one of their two-man frontline in the MLS Cup final against New England Revolution. The Republic of Ireland legend played every minute of their postseason run to the title, in a total of 34 appearances for the club in the 2014 campaign.
His professional career started way back in 1997 with Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he made his Premier League debut. A year later, Keane made his international bow, going on to play 146 times for the Republic of Ireland. His 68 goals for his country is the Irish record.
He then spent a season with Coventry City before moving abroad to Inter Milan. However, he spent just six months on the continent before signing for Leeds United on an 18-month deal. In 2002, Keane signed for Tottenham Hotspur, where he spent the majority of his career. He played there for eight seasons altogether, appearing more than 250 times and scoring a century of goals. During his time with the club, Spurs won the League Cup.
The Irish striker spent a single season at Liverpool, before returning to North London and, after loan spells at Celtic and West Ham United, made the move Stateside to play for the Galaxy. He was one of the men to have won three MLS Cups in that four-year spell, including the 2014 triumph.
The Irishman spent six seasons in MLS, winning LA Galaxy’s MVP four seasons running, before then moving to India, signing for ATK, where he became player-manager. Keane retired after the 2018 campaign, and is now currently both the Middlesbrough and Republic of Ireland assistant manager.
