GK – Jaime Penedo – Retired

The starting goalkeeper for the LA Galaxy when they took their fifth MLS Cup crown was Panamanian shot-stopper Jaime Penedo. The goalkeeper played 34 times for the Los Angeles side in their title season, including playing all 480 minutes of their postseason exploits.

Penedo’s career started at the turn of the century, signing his first professional contract with Estudiantes de Panama. After a single season there, he played for Plaza Amador and Árabe Unido in his home country before spending a season with Osasuna B in Spain. During his time in his home nation, Penedo became his country’s number one and went on to play in goal 134 times for Panama, second only in appearances for the national side to Gabriel Gómez.

In his international career, the shot-stopper finished as runner-up in both the 2005 and 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cups and was their first-choice goalkeeper for their debut appearance at a FIFA World Cup, which came in 2018.

After a spell in Spain, Penedo returned to his home nation and spent the next six years with Municipal, playing over 170 times for the club before he made his move to the States. He signed for LA Galaxy in August 2013 and went on to become the club’s starter ahead of their title-winning campaign in 2014, in which he played 34 times.

After leaving the Galaxy in 2015, Penedo spent a season with Deportivo Saprissa in Costa Rica, before then spending two seasons with Dinamo Bucuresti. In his time in Romania, Penedo helped the side to the Cupa Ligii trophy in 2017. He spent another season with Dinamo before retiring at the start of 2019.
