Atlanta United Vs New York City FC: 3 things we learned – History made
By Josh Bouland
1. Win sets up important stretch
Atlanta United closed out a tough stretch of games on Sunday. That stretch included four league games against teams above the playoff line and one Open Cup semi-final against Orlando City. Now, however, things get even tougher for the defending MLS champions.
First, the Five Stripes host Liga MX giants Club America on Wednesday night for the Campeones Cup, which pits the champs of both MLS and Liga MX in a one-off match for a trophy. To follow that midweek showdown, Atlanta travels to Portland for a 2018 MLS Cup rematch in a revamped Providence Park.
After that, in the span of nine days, Atlanta travel to Orlando for a Friday night rivalry showdown and then host the U.S. Open Cup final against Minnesota United in Mercedes Benz Stadium. Atlanta complete the grueling stretch with a road match that Saturday against conference leaders Philadelphia.
The Five Stripes seem to be rounding into form during the most crucial part of their season. They will need to be playing at their best since there are two trophies on the line and three important league matches throughout.
