New York Red Bulls Vs Toronto FC: 3 things we learned – Red Bulls revenge
By Marko Babic
1. Kaku critical
Paraguayan international Alejandro Romero Gamarra, better known as Kaku, was the most obvious beneficiary of Chris Armas’ half-time alterations.
Kaku played in his usual number 10 role in the first half, often drifting to the left to combine with winger Daniel Royer. But in the second half, Armas deployed him alongside centre-forward Brian White. The Paraguayan’s occupation of the right-inside channel culminated in two goals stemming from his exploitation of Toronto FC’s unprotected back four.
The New York Red Bulls took the lead in the 55th minute when Kaku quickly switched feet and slipped through defenders Omar Gonzalez and Justin Morrow before his cross, targeting left-back Kemar Lawrence at the far post, was deflected into the visitor’s goal by Chris Mavinga.
Kaku also helped create the Red Bulls’ game-clinching goal in stoppage time. His in-swinging cross to the far post forced keeper Quentin Westberg off his line to clear the ball. Fortunately for the Red Bulls, Westberg’s parry fell to the feet of Lawrence, who proceeded to thump the ball into an unoccupied TFC goal.
With his performance against Toronto FC, Kaku showed he can play a vital role in the Red Bulls attack when Armas makes an effort to maximize his talent.
