New York Red Bulls Vs Toronto FC: 3 things to look for – Erickson Gallardo debut?
By Marko Babic
1. Predicting Toronto FC’s starting XI
In the last meeting between the two sides, Toronto FC matched the Red Bulls 4-2-3-1 formation, and largely relied on direct passes targeting Jacob Shaffelburg to break New York’s high press. Given the efficacy of Vanney’s game plan, I think he will go with a similar line-up:

My projected starting XI includes three changes from the previous match against the Red Bulls with Chris Mavinga replacing Laurent Ciman, Nick DeLeon starting in place of Tsubasa Endoh, and newcomer Erickson Gallardo displacing Shaffelburg on the left.
Gallardo might take Shaffelburg’s spot due to his versatility. The left-footed Shaffelburg thrives playing close to the touchline, using his pace to get separation from opponents to create crossing and cutback opportunities, but offers little else. Gallardo is capable of utilizing changes of pace and direction as well as body feints to beat defenders and is able to use his right foot to send in-swinging crosses into the penalty area, switch the play, or cut inside to test the keeper himself.
Granting Gallardo his MLS debut against a highly motivated, tough-tackling Red Bulls side could be risky, but his inclusion in the starting line-up would look like a masterstroke on Greg Vanney’s behalf provided the winger can play to his potential on Saturday night.
