Portland Timbers’ MLS Cup 2015: Where are they now?
By Matt Coles
CB – Nat Borchers – Retired
The 2015 season was Nat Borchers’ first with the Portland Timbers, and he was a consistent part of the backline, starting 37 games across the campaign. The hard-hitting defender began his professional career in 2003. He spent three seasons with the Colorado Rapids, appearing the post-season in all three, before moving away from the States.
He made his international debut whilst at the Rapids and played three times for the USMNT, with his last appearance coming in 2010. Borchers made the move to Norway and spent two years with Odd Grenland, before returning to MLS with Real Salt Lake.
He spent seven seasons with the side from Salt Lake City, winning the MLS Cup with the side in his second year. Borchers played 34 games in total for RSL in 2009, as they won the big one. His penultimate season with Real Salt Lake also saw them appear in the MLS Cup final, but they were defeated by LA Galaxy.
Borchers was traded to Portland for the 2015 season and he went on to marshal the defence in their title-winning campaign. He spent another year with the side but suffered a leg injury that ruled him out for the latter part of the season. Borchers retired ahead of the 2017 MLS campaign.
