Toronto FC Vs New York Red Bulls: 3 things we learned – Jozy Altidore at his best
By Marko Babic
1. New York Red Bulls: Nightmare to play against; joy to watch
Admittedly, I have not watched the New York Red Bulls play more than a handful of times this season so my conclusions are based on a small-ish sample size, but I have been thoroughly impressed when I have seen them in action.
The New York Red Bulls are one of the most cohesive sides in MLS with each player giving their all to execute the role dictated to them by manager Chris Armas. In the defensive phase, their relentless, well-coordinated pressing, along with their physicality, makes it really difficult to retain possession or play through them. As such, they are not only able to disrupt opponents build-up play; they create scoring chances out of thin air by winning the ball high up the pitch.
In attack, the Red Bulls are more pleasing on the eye than one would expect from a side emphasizing defense. Their players rapidly identify and move into space during offensive transitions, leading to quick and astute passing combinations in midfield, often culminating in dangerous through balls played to strikers looking to expose weaknesses in opposing backlines.
eIf you value teamwork, structure, discipline, and intensity, the New York Red Bulls are worth watching. I will certainly be following the side with interest going forward, given the nature of the performances I have witnessed thus far.
