1. Keep an eye out for August 24th

With just two regular season games scheduled against each other, New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls made the most of their first meeting. High tensions, questionable officiating and a passion-filled 90 minutes have us more than excited for the rematch in August.

The departure of former City captain David Villa and the reduced role of Bradley Wright-Phillips showed fans the future of this rivalry as the pair have played crucial roles in the past. Newcomer Héber stepped up as NYCFC’s goalscoring target while Daniel Royer continued to be a hero for the Red Bulls.

While tension was evident throughout the entire game, sparks flew as it progressed. City full-back Anton Tinnerholm made his emotion clear throughout the match, getting in the face of Daniel Royer after the midfielder took the Swede down with a late tackle. Tinnerholm was eventually shown a yellow card for dissent after charging Corey Rockwell after he believed the referee missed another call.

Sean Johnson was irate with Alan Kelly after he allowed the Red Bulls’ second goal, screaming at the official as well as his assistant. Audio of head coach Domènec Torrent being told to stop arguing with fourth official Jon Freemon reached the ears of those tuned into Fox Sports One. The game’s final whistle also led to arguments between New York City FC and the game’s officials. While Seam Johnson was able to make his voice heard, Maxi Moralez andTorrent needed to be restrained.
