1. Predicting Toronto FC’s starting XI

The way I see it, Toronto FC will either revert back to a 5-4-1/3-5-2 hybrid or look to evolve their newly discovered 4-1-4-1/4-3-3 formation against the home side’s standard 4-2-3-1.

Playing with two up-front would benefit the attack in that the Reds will have the opportunity to create two-on-twos against the Galaxy’s center-backs. However, by deploying one wide player on each side of the pitch, TFC will invite crosses and find it difficult to exploit the wings in transition.

Here is how I expect Toronto FC to line-up in 5-4-1:

By utilizing a four-man defensive line, the Reds will have two wide players on both flanks, making it harder for LA to attack the wings, while also finding it easier to get in behind the Galaxy’s full-backs. That said, selecting two as opposed to three center-backs might afford Ibrahimović with the time and space he needs to test keeper Quentin Westberg.

Here is how I think TFC will look in a 4-1-4-1:

Given the success of Vanney’s altered approach in his side’s last two matches, it will be fascinating to see whether the TFC boss continues to develop his new system or abandons it in an effort to sure up his backline.
