There was a full slate of MLS action in Week 17. Here are the top three performances, including a seven-goal team effort and a combining duo.

It was a weekend of Major League Soccer action that saw both first-placed teams slip up. Los Angeles FC lost away to the in-form Colorado Rapids, while the Philadelphia Union were defeated by New York City FC in the Bronx.

Thanks to Philadelphia’s defeat, the top five in the East are now separated by just six points, with fifth-placed NYCFC having four games in hand over the top three sides.

3. Valentin Castellanos and Maxi Moralez

New York City FC put four goals past the Union, with a certain duo putting in the star efforts. Valentin Castellanos and Maxi Moralez both scored twice on Saturday, but their contributions were not done there, as the pair undid the Union backline.

The pair combined on all four goals, as Moralez assisted both of Castellanos’ strikes, while the latter was brought down in the box for the two penalties that the Argentinian scored. NYCFC did well to recover from falling behind on two occasions, first to an early Fafa Picault strike, and then, after Moralez had levelled it from the spot, when Kacper Przybylko put the visitors ahead once again.

Moralez then buried his second spot-kick ten minutes into the second half before Castellanos’ seven-minute double late on sealed the game for the Sky Blues. His first was the vital goal, putting New York ahead for the first time in the match and boosted them towards a vital victory in their push for the playoffs.
