By Daniel Garza
The arrival of Andrew Wooten has taken the Philadelphia Union to new heights as they add a lethal striker and proven goal scorer. Get ready for lots of goals in Philly.
It has been a stellar season thus far for the Philadelphia Union in 2019. The Eastern Conference club has impressed many with its early season start as they sit atop the standings.
And now, they have doubled down on their impressive start to the season, showing the rest of Major League Soccer that they intend on contending for the top spot come the end of the year.
29-year-old striker Andrew Wooten joins the Union from SV Sandhausen in the 2. Bundesliga where he had a very respectable goalscoring record. During the 2018-19 season, Wooten scored 17 goals in 31 league appearances for the German club.
With his goalscoring ability, Wooten strengths the Union’s attack and gives them another weapon in their quest for reaching the MLS Cup. At the moment, the Union have shown no signs of needing any extra help offensively which makes this signing more of a strengthing move then one to fill a void. They have scored 31 goals already this season, which is the most in the Eastern Conference and the second most in the league behind Los Angeles FC.
Wooten has entered a situation where he can make a massive impact on how the Union’s season goes. Having scored 17 goals in 31 appearances for Sandhausen, Wooten will be asked to do the same for the Union as they look to challenge for the top spot in the East.
MLS has plenty of high-quality strikers and Wooten will certainly be trying to prove he should be added to that list. He has the possibility of putting together a run of form that takes him to the double-digit goal mark in a short period of time.

In addition to his performance for the club, Wooten can look to impress the United States Men’s National Team coaching staff. The striker is available for selection for the national team and his play with the Union could garner a call up down the road. With the USMNT struggling for production with goals from their strikers, Wooten could yet prove to be the solution.
From a Philadelphia Union perspective, Wooten adds to already impressive bunch of goalscorers. They have received goals from many different players this season with four different players who have scored four goals. Polish forward Kasper Przybylko has been their best performing striker to date and has four goals in 10 appearances.
Wooten can come in and make sure the Union continue to create and score at a high rate. His pedigree suggests that he should be able to become the leading scorer for the club by the end of the campaign. This will allow the midfield to not have to be relied on to score when the strikers can’t seem to find the back of the net, which has been the case thus far.
This signing has the potential to be a game changer for the Union as the MLS season enters a critical part of the schedule.
