MLS: 5 stars who could shine at Copa America
By Matt Coles
Nicolas Lodeiro – Uruguay & Seattle Sounders
The second Sounders man on this list is Nicolas Lodeiro, a Uruguayan midfielder who has been playing in MLS for nearly three years. He made the move from Boca Juniors in July 2016 and has become influential for the Rave Green ever since.
In his 87 appearances in the northwest, Lodeiro has 21 goals and 44 assists, averaging one or the other every 1.2 games. The Uruguayan was part of the squad that won the Copa America in 2011, and he will aim to push his country to a second title this decade.
Lodeiro likely will not start for Uruguay. The quality of the squad is exceptionally high, one of the best in the competition, but he is versatile and experienced, with 56 caps for his country. He will be valuable depth for Oscar Tabarez.
