MLS: Ranking all 24 Major League Soccer stadiums
14. Montreal Impact – Stade Saputo – Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Capacity: 20,801
Opened: 2008
Pros: Soccer-specific, natural surface, covered seating, sightlines
Cons: Location
Montreal is SO lucky they moved out of Olympic Stadium before I made this list OR ELSE. The Impact smartly moved to this gem of a soccer-specific stadium and never looked back (unless it’s cold, in which case, yes, they do sometimes revert back to their old ways). While Olympic Stadium represents everything bad about a potential soccer stadium, Stade Saputo gets it right. It has a great atmosphere, the sightlines are clear of obstructions, and the stands are at least partially covered, keeping the fans somewhat dry while the play on the field is still affected by the elements. Although it is located a fair ways from downtown Montreal, it is still on the island, so no bridge ballyhoos to deal with. All that’s left is to improve is that Sahara Desert-esque surface. Get that right and all will be good with Stade Saputo.
