2. Toronto FC 2-0 Seattle Sounders, December 9, 2017

Now I know what you’re thinking. This is undoubtedly TFC’s greatest accomplishment, so it should be number one on this list. While the first part of that statement is definitely true, there is a match that I believe spawned more greatness than this one. With that being said, this match was truly unbelievable. For longtime TFC fans, it served as a release for all of those years at the bottom of the table as the laughing stock of the league. For those in the younger age bracket, it did something else, something more important. It showed them that Toronto could win something.

With the exception of the Argos, Toronto hadn’t won a major sports championship since the Blue Jays World Series win in 1993. This victory proved for a whole generation that it is possible to build and win in this city. As for the result, it was never in question. After suffering the heartbreak of losing MLS Cup in an excruciating manner last year, TFC came out on the front foot and never let up. It was just a matter of time before they filled the net.

Sure enough, it was the man who put them through to the finals on one foot to put TFC ahead. In the 67th minute, Jozy Altidore kept his head and fired a shot past former TFC goalkeeper Stefen Frei to make it 1-0 for the home team. Victor Vazquez made sure the Reds stayed ahead for good with a goal in stoppage time that kickstarted the celebration. For the first time in MLS history, Toronto FC were champions.

With the MLS Cup win, they completed the domestic treble, winning the Supporters’ Shield, the Canadian Championship, and of course, MLS Cup. This match was the triumph, the planting of the flag on the top of the hill. However, all of this would not have happened if it wasn’t for one single match that changed the course of TFC history forever, that made the struggle possible. Here is the number one match in Toronto FC history.
