Toronto FC: Top 10 matches in club history
6. Montreal Impact 1-6 Toronto FC, June 18, 2009
Many of the matches on this list are close battles, ones that came down to a couple of minutes or even a couple of inches (we’ll get to the crossbar hits later on, you’ll see). This one did not. In fact, this beatdown was so gloriously birlliant that it instigated a derby that now ranks in the upper echelons of North American soccer in terms of animosity.

What’s crazy is that Montreal actually had the lead in this match before the TFC onslaught began. When it was all said and done, embattled captain Dwayne de Rosario had a hat trick, Amado Guevara had a brace and Chad Barrett added another, giving TFC a 6-1 win over their arch-rivals. Back in 2009, the seemingly amorphous Canadian Championship worked differently. Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal all played each other twice, once home and once away, to determine the winner. Whichever club at the end of the six matches had the most points was declared the Canadian Champion.
With Toronto’s fixture with Montreal being last of them all, TFC knew they had to win, and win big. Coming into the match, Vancouver was at the maximum nine points while having accrued a goal differential of +4. With a win, TFC would match Vancouver at nine points, but their goal differential sat at 0. What makes the entire situation even more unbelievable is that the goal Barrett scored to put the trophy in Toronto FC’s hands came just eight minutes from full-time.
It came right down to the wire, but Toronto FC were able to lay a savage beatdown on their rivals and steal the Voyager’s Cup in the process. This offensive explosion from an otherwise very pedestrian team gave TFC their first trophy ever and provided one of the best matches in TFC history. Relive the Montreal Miracle here.
