Toronto FC: Top 10 matches in club history
7. Club America 1-1 Toronto FC, April 10, 2018
There’s an argument to be made that Toronto FC’s 1-1 draw in Mexico City is their best single result in club history, but for now, the match as a whole resides in the seventh spot. Before April 10, 2018, it was thought that the concoction of altitude, pollution, atmosphere and **ahem** other variables that Estadio Azteca brought to the table were borderline unconquerable for an MLS team.
A few years after Montreal achieved the same result in a first leg match at the Azteca, Toronto FC proved it wasn’t a fluke. After beating America 3-1 at BMO Field in the first leg, TFC got an early away goal from Jonathan Osorio in the 12th minute and then held that lead for 80-plus minutes until Mateus Uribe filed home a meaningless penalty in stoppage time.
Yes, TFC were aided by a significant cushion coming into Mexico City, however closing out Club America on their home turf is no small feat. The mystique of Azteca is real, however for one night in April, TFC tamed the beast.
