9. Toronto FC 2-1 Tigres UANL, March 7, 2018

Say what you want about Toronto FC’s fruitless CONCACAF Champions League run of 2018, but it undoubtedly provided some of the best matches in club history. Leg one of their tie with Tigres had it all: adverse conditions, an overcome deficit, and of course, some late BMO Field drama.

Prior to this late winter night, Toronto had only one win in eight tries against Mexican opposition, and had never won a two-legged fixture on aggregate over a Liga MX side. The groundwork for their first such victory would be laid on this night. The path to victory would not be without adversity, however. Tigres talisman Eduardo Vargas put the Mexican side up first with a rocket of a strike in the 52nd minute.

But then Jozy Altidore brought the Reds level in the 60th and Jonathan Osorio tapped in a back-heel flick to win it in the 89th minute. While Toronto FC’s eventual 3-2 loss in Monterrey was enough to see them through, beating Tigres and staying resolute after giving up the away goal serves as the bigger feat. Before this night, the world saw MLS as squarely behind Liga MX. What transpired on the evening of March 7, 2018, challenged that forever.
