Toronto FC: Top 10 matches in club history
Toronto FC have had some wonderful moments and some disastrous ones. Here, we celebrate the wonderful ones. Here are the top 10 matches in TFC history.
Over the last three-and-a-half years, Toronto FC has emerged as one of the premier clubs in MLS. Their first nine years, however, were not so glamorous.
From deep runs in the CONCACAF Champions League to MLS Cup victories and trials against Vancouver and Montreal in Canadian Championships, Toronto has had many great outing. The Reds have produced some gems over their 12-and-a-half-year existence.
Here are their top 10 matches of all time.
10. Toronto FC 1-3 Chicago Fire, May 12, 2007
Is there a more appropriate place to start a list as such than with the infamous seat cushion incident during Toronto FC’s inaugural season? Danny Dichio’s netting of the first goal in club history set off an explosion of complementary seat cushions the likes of which you’ve never seen before (and never will see again – there’s no way they’ll ever give those away again!).
Dichio’s goal is so embedded in Toronto fans’ memories that supporters sing the “Dichio 24” chant at minute 23:14 of each match to commemorate the time that Dichio finished off Edson Buddle’s cross back in 2007.
While this match didn’t deliver much in the result department, it provided the club and its fans with a moment that will stay with them for a lifetime. You can only have one first, and Danny Dichio made sure it was a memorable one, albeit with an assist from the mob mentality.
