1. Solid Sinovic

Many Sporting supporters dreaded a potential Alberth Elis-Seth Sinovic duel prior to last night’s game, as they feared the pacey and technically gifted Peruvian would dominate the plodding left-back. Defenders, especially full-backs, are often unsung heroes. Nevertheless, Sinovic ought to receive praise for containing one of the MLS’ most dangerous attacking talents.

The Kansas-native knew when to get tight to Houston Dynamo winger Elis in order to disrupt his first touch. The Croatian-American also exhibited great discipline at times, giving Elis just enough space to trick the Houston attacker into thinking he could knock the ball past him toward the left touchline, then stepping across the Peruvian’s body to win the ball.

Despite scoring, La Panterita was overwhelmed by Sinovic’s defensive prowess, showing visible signs of frustration by getting into confrontations with officials as well as Sinovic himself throughout the match. What was thought to be a major vulnerability of SKC ended up being a huge strength, and that is testament to Sinovic’s play.
