2. Pity Martinez
Gonzalo Martinez finally scored his first goal for Atlanta United. Can he build off of his first taster of success? Vancouver and New York may be the perfect opponents for Martinez’s style of production. For a player who likes to shoot from medium range, Vancouver is especially an opportunity to score.
With Vancouver’s tendency to sit back and defend, there will be limited space for Atlanta to operate their attack with. However, if Martinez sees an ounce of space from long range, he will not hesitate to shoot. He only has the one goal so far, but with his tendency to shoot he is bound to score again very soon.
The same can be applied to New York. Since Red Bulls like to press, Martinez will have the opportunity to beat defenders one on one with his skill on the ball. If he can beat his man in an individual matchup, he will likely have the space to shoot.
Set pieces will also be a major factor in both matches and Martinez will be the x-factor on those set pieces. He has already come inches away from scoring on multiple occasions this season. If a set piece is in the right spot against either team this week, look for Martinez to score his first free kick with Atlanta.
