Midfield

RWB – Anton Tinnerholm – 7.5

New York City FC employed a back three during the first half of this match. That gave Anton Tinnerholm more freedom to get forward and impact the attack. He was one of the players that thrived the most in this formation.

Tinnerholm consistently ran down the right-hand side, providing width in the final third. He has a great ability to beat defenders with the ball at his feet. He was given credit for four dribbles this match, which was easily the most on his team. He also had a key pass, although neither of his two crosses found a home.

Tinnerholm put one shot on target but it was soft and poorly taken. He had done a great job of cutting into the box but settled for a shot rather than looking to move the ball to a teammate in a better position than himself.  Nonetheless, a strong outing in a new position.

CM – Alexander Ring – 7

With James Sands playing center-back, Alexander Ring stepped back into his customary holding midfield position. He was solid there and played a major role in keeping New York City FC in control of possession and playing on the font foot.

Ring played 85 passes, which was 13 more than any other player. He found a teammate on eight of his ten long passes, which is a good completion rate, and his overall passing accuracy was 89.4%. Ring also had a key pass this match.

New York City FC’s captain played a crucial part in the offense through the team’s first four games of the season. He averaged three shots per game during that stretch, scoring two goals. However, the last two matches, while playing deeper in midfield, he has not taken a single shot.

On the defensive end, Ring had two tackles and one interception. He always does a great job of tracking back and finished the match with four clearances. Ring is averaging 2.5 clearances per match. That is the highest figure in MLS for a midfield player.

CM – Ebenezer Ofori – 6

Ebenezer Ofori had a solid but not spectacular match. He held possession well, completing 89.9% of his passes. However, there was little risk and no reward in his plays forward. Ofori finished the match with no key passes, and his one shot was off-target. Ofori finished the match with three tackles and an interception.

LWB – Ronald Matarrita – 6.5

Ronald Matarrita has started three of New York City FC’s last four matches and has largely done well with those opportunities. New York City FC began by playing a back three, giving Matarrita the opportunity to play his natural position: left wing-back. He was able to get forward and provide width, but he left NYCFC and center-back Tony Rocha exposed at times. Matarrita was better defensively in the second half. He finished the match with a team-high four tackles, an interception, and a clearance.

He has been one of New York City FC’s most dangerous players going forward in his past few starts, but he struggled with his final ball against Minnesota United FC. He finished without a key pass and just one of his six crosses found a teammate. All four of Matarrita’s long pass attempts failed to find their intended target, while his passing completion rate was just 74.5%. Neither of his two shots were on-target.
