3. Are the Columbus Crew for real?

With D.C. United dropping points the last week, the Columbus Crew find themselves atop the Eastern Conference table. They have 13 points through six matches, which include four wins, a draw, and a loss — Toronto FC are just three points behind the Crew and have two games in hand. The Crew have been led by their defense, and goalkeeper, Zack Steffen. The Crew have allowed just four goals, 0.67 per match.

The Crew have not played a difficult schedule thus far. Their best win has come against FC Dallas, who have 10 points, and that win came at home. They played in Philadelphia, the Union also have 10 points this season, and lost 0-3. Three of the Crew’s four wins have come at home and their lone road victory came against the New England Revolution, a team the Crew have already beaten twice.

This week, Columbus travels to Montreal. It will be a good opportunity for the Crew to pick up their second road victory. Montreal played just this past Tuesday in a scoreless draw at D.C. United. More importantly, the Impact are likely without Ignacio Piatti again. I always say, ‘No Piatti, No Chance’. After this match, the Crew will be at home against Portland, a team that has struggled this season. At the end of April and beginning of May, though. Columbus face a tough stretch where they have to play D.C. United twice and travel to Houston in a two-week span. If the Crew are still on top following those matches, it may be time to start designing 2019 MLS Cup T-shirts.

The Columbus Crew are in Montreal to face the Impact this Saturday at 1 PM EST
