MLS Week 7: Top 7 Storylines – Undefeated teams meet
5. Allianz Field opens
After playing their home games at Minnesota University’s TCF Bank Stadium for their first two seasons, Minnesota United FC’s own stadium is finished and ready to open. The Loons will play at Allianz Field, located in St. Paul, for the first time this Saturday, welcoming New York City FC to town.
Minnesota United have played their first five matches of the season on the road, while waiting to open Allianz Field. They have fared well, winning three and earning nine points in total. They will gladly take that record to start the season.
Darwin Quintero has started hot, looking like an All-MLS player. He has three goals and three assists in four starts already. He missed last week’s match due to injury and is listed as questionable for this weekend’s match. Considering the historical significance of this match, Quintero will play if he can.
Even without Quintero, the Loons were able to achieve a 2-1 victory over the Red Bulls on the road last week. Abu Danladi made his first start of the season and scored. Minnesota have the talent and depth to make noise this season, and there are some who believed before the season began they were destined to make the playoffs.
Minnesota United’s first match at Allianz Field will be against New York City FC, who have managed four draws and a loss through five matches. They have yet to win in MLS this season. New York City FC will be without their best player, Maxi Moralez for the third straight game. So, Minnesota United should be able to come away with three points in their home-opener.
Minnesota United FC will open Allianz Field against NYCFC this Saturday at 5 PM EST
