USWNT: 100-goal Alex Morgan the World Cup spark
Alex Morgan has joined elite company scoring 100 goals for the USWNT. She is the spark of the summer’s World Cup defense.
On Thursday, April 4, the U.S. Women’s Nation Team hosted Australia at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Colorado. The match is just one of the many friendlies the team has played in the lead up to the World Cup in France this summer.
Just 14 minutes into the game, striker Alex Morgan dribbled her way into the box and slotted home the opening goal of the match while falling to the ground.
The goal was the epitome of the attacker’s style of play. She showed off her stamina and wonderful ability to dribble in and around several defenders, before, most importantly, completing the opportunity with a lovely, curled effort into the far corner.

Carli Lyod is currently the only player on the roster who boasts over 100 goals. Lyod has 105 goals from 268 appearances, a benchmark Morgan has now met. Lloyd has reached the 100-goal mark 368 days ago, making April a momentous month for the USWNT two years in a row.
Reaching the centurion milestone is no small feat, something only 16 other women have been able to achieve, of which six are also American.
Here are the six USWNT players to top the 100-goal mark:
- Abby Wambach – 184
- Mia Hamm – 179
- Kristine Lilly – 130
- Carli Lyod – 105
- Michelle Akers – 105
- Tiffeny Milbrett – 100

In this year’s run-up to the 2019 World Cup, Morgan has participated in all five of the team’s matches, scoring a goal in each.
This feat is no doubt the most prolific of Morgan’s career, but she’s no stranger to breaking records. She holds the record for being the third-highest goalscorer at the University of California-Berkley. Morgan is now tied with Tiffeny Milbrett in sixth place in the USWNT team for all-time scoring., Still far away from Abby Wambach, who scored 184 goals in 256 appearances with the US, Morgan will be chasing down the history books for years to come.
Despite being further down the pecking order, she boasts the third-highest goal-per-game average amongst the nations top scorers. Only Wambach and Michelle Akers, who earned themselves a 0.72 and 0.69 respectively, have a better goals-per-game ratio than Morgan’s 0.63.
The feat is a sensational achievement for one of the world’s best players. And if the USWNT are to defend their World Cup crown in the summer, it will be the goals of their attackers that carry them there. Namely, it will be Alex Morgan and her astounding strike rate.
