Japan, England, the champions, and Brazil are three of the better teams in the world. The USWNT beat just one of them in the SheBelieves Cup, a semi-meaningless 1-0 win over Brazil once the trophy had already been essentially handed to either England or Japan.
This win, then, at least confirms that they are still in the top five. Australia entered this match ranked sixth and the USWNT were comfortably the better team here.
This will be the last top 10-ranked team the USWNT will face before the World Cup. As a result, they will need to use this as one of their last evaluations for what it’s going to take to get back to the finals of the tournament. This may have only been a friendly, but this was a huge, confidence-boosting win nonetheless.
