It was a historic night for Alex Morgan as the United States Women’s National Team came away victorious against Australia. The friendly match ended in a 5-3 win for the USWNT who continue their preparation for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in June.
After falling behind 2-1 early in the second half, the U.S. rallied to come back and take the victory as they found themselves exchanging goals with another top 10 ranked country.
Here are three things we learned from the 5-3 victory.
3. Alex Morgan reaches 100-goal mark
All eyes were on Alex Morgan on Thursday night. The USWNT forward entered the fixture just one goal away from reaching 100 career goals with the U.S. senior team. It did not take long for Morgan to score the all-important goal as she opened the scoring in the 14th minute.
Hustling an Australian defender off the ball on the left flank, Morgan drove inside, dropped her shoulder and shimmied her way into the penalty area. Then, with calmness and precision, she picked out the far corner for her 100th international strike.
This achievement by Morgan is a display of her dominant presence over the years at the striker position and her work rate as a goal scorer. The USWNT will need Morgan to come up big for them this summer. There are bound to be more goals from her in the important matches to come.
