Midfield

M – Russell Canouse – D.C. United

Russell Canouse is the token holding midfielder in this week’s Team of the Week, making his second appearance of the season. He, like Brillant, helped to quell the comeback mounted by Orlando City SC. Canouse finished the match with five tackles, four interceptions, and there clearances.

M – Alejandro Pozuelo – Toronto FC – Player of the Week

Alejandro Pozuelo wins Player of the Week honors, in just his first week in MLS. Pozuelo proved to be a season-changing player, and may be the new favorite to win the Newcomer of the Year award — and MVP is not out of the question either. He scored two goals on four shots. His goals included a Panenka from the penalty spot and an absolutely perfect chip from outside the box over NYCFC goalkeeper, Sean Johnson. Pozuelo also recorded an assist and made another five key passes.

M – Carles Gil – New England Revolution

Carles Gil returns to the list after also appearing on the Week 3 edition. This week’s performance was more important for Gil though, as he helped the Revolution win their first match of the 2019 MLS season. As far as production, Gil only shows an assist, taking the set-piece that Jalil Alibaba headed in. However, Gil could have had several more assists. He was able to create opportunities from all over the pitch. In addition to his assist, Gil had six key passes. Four of his nine crosses found a teammate, six of his nine long passes were successful, and all three of his through-balls connected. Gil can do it all.

M – Paxton Pomykal – FC Dallas

Move aside Christian Pulisic, Paxton Pomykal is having a breakout season and could be the next young American to make an impact on the world stage. Pomykal bagged a brace against Real Salt Lake. More than the goals though, the midfielder put in a complete performance, operating as the number 10 in FC Dallas’ midfield. Pomykal put three of four shots on goal, made two key passes, and made five tackles.
