The opening month of the MLS season provided plenty of entertainment and storylines. Here are five things we learned from MLS in March.

When the Major League Soccer season got underway in March, there were many storylines to follow, from Atlanta Untied’s title defense to newly arrived Designated Players like Nani for Orlando City.

These were just some of the things to watch for during March. Now, though, the first month of the 2019 season is in the books. Plenty has changed.

Here are five things we learned.

5. Atlanta United in trouble

Just a year prior, Toronto FC struggled to replicate the form that earned them their first MLS Cup title. The ensuing result for Toronto was a disastrous season in the league that saw them miss the postseason altogether. Now, Atlanta United are beginning to show signs of their own problems in a title defense. Are they going to be a mirror image of what we saw from Toronto in 2018?

The defending champions have yet to win an MLS fixture and they were handed their second loss of the season in a rainy and miserable match against the Columbus Crew at the weekend. Everything seems to be working against them as Frank de Boer looks for a string of consistency from a club who have become accustomed to winning.

Another disappointing takeaway from March for Atlanta was the play of star player, Pity Martinez. The new arrival has yet to have a major impact for Atlanta in MLS and was not up to form in the CONCACAF Champions League either. They will need him to come to life if they hope to start getting back in the win column.
