Lionel Messi asked Pity Martinez what it is like to play in MLS. It is time for all MLS fans to dream about the best player in the world moving Stateside.

I am 24 years old. I have had the pleasure of watching some truly wonderful footballers over the years. Thierry Henry, Zinedine Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Andres Iniesta. And the list goes on and on and on. But for all of the fabulous footballers that the last two decades have produced, none compare to the jaw-dropping, eye-bulging, brain-boggling brilliance of Lionel Messi.

There is not a player in the world that I have seen who boasts the same balance, the skill, the speed, the technique, the manipulation of his own body, the ball and the defender as Messi. He truly is in a league of his own, a pure revelation to watch, someone who opened my eyes to what was possible with a football.

The arguments of Greatest of All Time are somewhat redundant. Comparing eras is impossible. And what stats do you use to determine the definition of ‘greatest’? It is an argument that will rage forevermore. But Messi is right at the heart of it, and that is proof enough of his utter sublime talent.

And now there is the chance that this world-beating player, that this talent, that this ‘GOAT’, could be on his way to Major League Soccer. No matter the tenuous nature of the link, and it is thoroughly tenuous, it still allows me to dream about watching a waltzing Messi Stateside.

On Friday, Pity Martinez, who is currently playing with Atlanta United and will feature for Argentina alongside Messi in the March international break, revealed that Messi has asked him about life in MLS.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I ask about what it is like to do lots of things. I ask my sister about what it is like to work for a charity. I ask my friends about what their recent holidays were. I ask my colleagues about their dreams for their career in the industry of sports writing. This does not mean that I am going to do any of the things that I am asking about.

We have no knowledge of the conversation. We do not know any context, we do not know why Messi asked, we have little idea of whether it was a nonchalant, throwaway, small-talk query or whether it was a serious investigation into what life could be like in the future. And we will never know. But, quite frankly, that does not matter one iota. Because this is Messi. Coming to MLS. And when thinking about that prospect, any logic quickly flies out the window.

You see, even a whisper of a player of Messi’s unrivalled excellence coming to MLS is enough to get the mind racing. And once the mind is racing, rationale has little influence. This is the time for me and MLS fans to dream about the best player in the world, one day, coming to MLS.

So don’t rain on our parade. Don’t say that he will be 37 by the time he comes and unable to run. Don’t say that he will be half-arsed and only here for a nice, semi-retirement home. Don’t spout the logic. Just dream. Messi is on his way (kind of).
