MLS Week 2: Top 7 storylines to watch
2. Atlanta United’s slow start to the season
Speaking of Atlanta United, they have had a horrid start to their 2019 campaign. They have played four competitive matches (three in CCL, one in MLS), and they have lost three of them. This past week they lost to D.C. United on Sunday night before going to Mexico and losing to Monterrey.
2019 is an important season for Atlanta United. It is their opportunity to prove that it is not only safe but smart for MLS teams to sell players. A successful Atlanta United post Miguel Almiron would be a boon for the league and its presentation on the world stage. However, they have struggled to gel thus far, and it does not appear as though manager, Frank de Boer, knows the best way to use his players.
Thankfully, Atlanta get to come home and face expansion team, FC Cincinnati. They should be able to secure the win and gain some confidence. Although Atlanta will be tempted to rotate their squad with a decisive CCL match occurring next week, they cannot afford to lose this weekend.
