MLS Week 1: First impressions of all 24 teams
New York Red Bulls
New York does not have the top-end talent to coast through games, but it does have the depth to contend for multiple trophies. The CCL is out of reach, but this team is built to challenge for a domestic double at the very least. A 1-1 draw against Columbus is a decent result at any time, much less when dealing with CCL fixture congestion.
New York played a rotated line-up full of reserves, but those second and third choice players handled themselves well. Andreas Ivan has scored twice in two games. If he can help Bradley Wright-Phillips carry the goalscoring burden this season, New York’s attack would be less predictable than it was last season.
While the absence of the star quality of some of the other elite MLS teams may seem concerning, with the best defense in the league and depth at every position, Chris Armas is acutely aware of how to manage his roster. The Red Bulls will be where it counts once again.
