Columbus Crew — 51 pts

Stock Down

Key Additions: D W.Francis, G J.Bendik, M Robinho

Key Losses: Gregg Berhalter, M C.Martinez, G Z.Steffen (transfer to Man City in the summer), D M.Valenzuela (out for the season)

The Crew have reason to celebrate; they are staying in Columbus! Unfortunately, Gregg Berhalter has moved on in the pursuit of covering his country in glory. Milton Valenzuela, one of the best left-backs in the league, is out for the season. Most importantly, they are staring down the barrel of losing one of the three best goalkeepers in MLS to Manchester City this summer.

Now, new manager Caleb Porter has proven to be a successful boss in MLS. Columbus have retained almost their entire squad from a year ago, which finished fifth in the Eastern Conference. Waylon Francis, Joe Bendik, and Robinho [not that one] are solid if unspectacular signings — though, to be honest, I don’t know much about Robinho; but, due to the money involved, and the fact Columbus have starting wingers, it seems he’s more of a rotation player than a star.

The question for the Crew this year is: How will Berhalter’s team fit into Porter’s system? Gyasi Zardes thrived with Berhalter, but could he regress back to the inconsistent player he’s always been now that Berhalter is gone? Columbus should be in the playoffs again. They retain the bulk of their team from a year ago, but there will be some hiccups preventing them from matching 51 points.
