MLS: Ranking the 5 CCL teams
2. New York Red Bulls
The draw was undoubtedly kind to the New York Red Bulls. They have avoided the heavily-laden half with Monterrey, Atlanta United and all of the other MLS clubs bar the Houston Dynamo, and they will not have to face one of the elite CONCACAF teams until the semi-finals, when, if they get that far, they will likely play Tigres.
If that wasn’t enough, the Red Bulls are coming off a record-setting 2018 season in which they amassed more points than any MLS team in history and boast a plethora of star attackers, led by Bradley Wright-Phillips and Kaku, supported by the best defence in MLS.
The loss of Tyler Adams in the midfield will sting, but this is one of the more balanced teams in the competition, with depth at almost every position. There is a nice combination of youth and experience, athleticism and creativity, and they look well set for a deep run in 2019.
