USMNT: Tim Weah can only benefit from Celtic loan
By Daniel Garza
Tim Weah, one of the USMNT’s potential future stars could be headed to Celtic on a loan spell. What does this mean for the 18-year-old moving forward?
One of the bright sparks of the U.S. Men’s National Team set-up, Tim Weah, according to reports last weekend, appears to be headed to Celtic in the Scottish Professional Football League for the remainder of the 2018-19 season.
The 18-year-old midfielder has not been on the team sheet very often for Paris Saint-Germain and the French giants seem keen on loaning him out to get the playing time he needs.
Weah just signed a contract with PSG through the 2021 season so this move to Celtic would in no way be a potential permanent transfer.

There really isn’t a very good chance that Weah would have seen the pitch for PSG this season. They are one of the top contenders to reach the UEFA Champions League final and have a wealth of riches at the positions that Weah plays. Additionally, the club has been firing on all cylinders and, as a result, the usual first-team players have not been in danger of losing their spots.
With the Celtic rumours growing stronger by the week, Weah would be in a prime position to help aid the Scottish club in their defence of the SPFL title.
Celtic have dominated Scottish football for the past few seasons and, much like Weah’s current club PSG, expect to be in contention every season for the league and domestic cup titles. Having seen what it takes to perform for a club with extremely high standards, Weah will bring with him a hunger and understanding of the effort needed daily to get results.
This season has been competitive as ever in the SPFL. Celtic are locked in a four-club battle for the top spot in the table. Rivals Rangers have emerged as a contender and Kilmarnock are up there alongside Aberdeen.
Due to the circumstances that Weah could arrive under, this is the perfect test for the young USMNT player. There will be some major pressure to perform in order to help Celtic stay atop the SPFL table. He has never encountered a situation like this in his professional career and it will set the stage for him to really display what he has been able to develop at PSG.
What will transpire will be his first real opportunity at seeing first-team minutes on a consistent and predictable basis. At the age of 18, that is critical. The transition from youth to senior football is a difficult one, as we have seen with many young USMNT prospects in the past. The key is playing regularly. At PSG, Weah will not be afforded that chance. At Celtic, the landscape is very different indeed.
His parent club will certainly be watching him closely as well, especially with the contract extension being announced before his departure. His extension signals a trust from the club that they see a future in him. This is his time to shine, and the opportunities that he will be afforded can only be of benefit.
