1. The MLS Cup Final lies ahead

Atlanta United will host the Portland Timbers for the 2018 MLS Cup Final. With their series win over New York Red Bulls, Atlanta gets their first chance at the MLS Cup in just their second year.

Their home field advantage is known, as is their opponent. These teams met back on June 24 to a 1-1 draw that featured a Julian Gressel goal. While that game finished in a draw, the play showed anything but. Atlanta had many opportunities to close out the game and find a second goal but were unable to capitalize.

Atlanta’s home form was starting to wane slightly at the time and the Portland match illustrated that. Atlanta’s inability to close out the game was unfortunate and they will now get a chance to avenge such a poor finish.

This was Atlanta’s goal from the beginning. They wanted the Supporters Shield and they wanted the Open Cup. With both of those opportunities in the rearview, they only have one trophy left to chase.
