Toronto FC: Top 5 Sebastian Giovinco goals from 2018
By Daniel Garza
The always exciting Sebastian Giovinco put together an impressive highlight reel during Toronto FC’s campaign. Here are the top five goals from 2018.
Sebastian Giovinco entered 2018 on a high note after a successful postseason run saw Toronto FC claim their first Major League Soccer title in club history. The Italian midfielder had put up impressive numbers in 2017 by registering 16 goals and six assists in the regular season. Having reached double digits in goals every one of this MLS seasons, it was an afterthought to think he would not reach 10 goals or more in 2018.
Very quickly. a harsh reality set in that not every season can be replicated. Giovinco struggled to find the back net for the first two months of the season and was finally able to get on the goal sheet in early May. From there, he was able to put together a decent season with 13 goals and 15 assists.
With the club in need of a boost to reach the playoffs, Giovinco did the best he could to help lead the way. From July 1st to the end of the season, the midfielder scored 10 goals for his club. In the end, the season ended in disappointment as a whole for the reigning champions but Giovinco lit up the scoreboard in style once more. From splendid free kicks to individual runs into the box, it was still all there.
Here are the top five goals from Giovinco’s 2018 season.
5. vs. Atlanta United
On the final matchday of the season, Toronto FC completely outplayed Atlanta United and Giovinco scored the final goal of the match in style with this creative goal.
4. vs. New England Revolution
Giovinco lets this shot goal from just outside the 18 and the goalkeeper has no chance of stopping this strike.
3. vs. Chicago Fire
This goal ignited Giovinco’s best stretch of the season where he would go on to score six goals in six MLS appearances.
2. vs. Minnesota United
Although Toronto was down three goals at this point in the match, Giovinco helped spur on a comeback bid as he leaves the goalkeeper no hope with his long-range effort.
1. vs. Columbus Crew
His best free-kick goal of the season came against the Crew in June. It was something Toronto were missing at this point of the season and the Italian midfielder delivered.
Another great collection of goals highlighted Giovinco’s season. Although Giovinco and Toronto FC were unable to defend their title, there is sure to be more to come from the star player and his club in 2019.
