A sensational first season for Wayne Rooney in MLS brought on a colossal comeback by D.C. United. Here are the top five goals from the Manchester United legend’s 2018 season.

In just a short time, Wayne Rooney established himself in Major League Soccer. All the talk of how he would perform in a new league and the speculation on his fitness was quickly put to rest by his 12 goals in 20 appearances.

Rooney was instrumental in the resurgence of D.C. United who looked down and out of the playoff race by the midpoint of the season. Following Rooney’s arrival, the club ignited for an incredible run that saw them skyrocket up the table and into third place in the Eastern Conference table. In his last six regular season matches, he scored an incredible seven goals and turned in three multi-goal performances.

Despite a penalty shootout loss to the Columbus Crew, Rooney set the stage for perhaps an even more incredible season in 2019. One has to wonder how many goals he can score in an entire season after entering the scene in the summer during the 2018 campaign.

5. vs. New York City FC

Luciano Acosta and Rooney combined for multiple goals this season and this one of the best the duo produced. Acosta finds Rooney in front of the net after a terrific run by the midfielder.

4. vs. Montreal Impact

Rooney takes on the Montreal backline by himself and finds the back of the net in what was his second multi-goal game of the season.

3. vs. New York Red Bulls

A goal of high quality here shows that Rooney still has that finishing ability that made him such a star in the Premier League. The danger he poses in the box is still an ever-present threat to opposing backlines.

2 vs. Portland Timbers

Rooney completed his first MLS brace in style with this splendid free kick against the Timbers. This wouldn’t be the last time he produced a high-quality set-piece goal.

1. vs. Toronto FC

It was on Oct. 17th that Rooney scored this fantastic free kick from long range. Seen all over the world, this goal announced the return of Rooney’s goal-scoring ways. It’s certainly worth a few clicks of the replay button.

With Rooney set to return for another season in MLS, there are certainly going to be more top-drawer moments from the striker to come.
