MLS: Top 25 Under-25 Players – 20-16
By Daniel Garza
MLS is stocked full of young, developing talent. Here are the top 25 players aged under 25 currently in the league. We continue with numbers 20 – 16.
A young and talented group of midfielders and forwards makes up the majority of players ranked 20 through 16 on the Top 25 Players under-25 in MLS. The very last player on this list is quickly becoming a star defender in what has been a resurgent year for him.
Here’s who occupies spots 20 through 16.
20. Jesus Medina (M) – New York City FC (21)
New York City FC’s offseason signing has done well in his first season in Major League Soccer. At just 21, Jesus Medina is a player that could develop into a big player for NYCFC in the future. He has produced six goals and seven assists in 26 appearances. During July, he showed glimpses of what he can bring to the league when he had three goals and one assist in five matches.
19. Marky Delgado (M) – Toronto FC (23)
After helping Toronto earn their first MLS Cup last season, Marky Delgado returned this season to regular appearances for the defending champions. His performances last season helped earn him national team call-ups this year and he is one of the players in the mix during the rebuild of the USMNT. Delgado didn’t show any signs of a dip in form this year and the 23-year-old has shown this as a regular starter for Toronto towards the end of the season.
18. Diego Fagundez (M) – New England Revolution (23)
Throughout his entire career at New England, Diego Fagundez has been a consistent performer. Always a dangerous player on the attack, Fagundez clearly has plenty of years ahead of more goals in MLS. He is arguably one of the best Homegrown players of his generation.
17. Diego Rubio (F) – Sporting Kansas City (25)
Despite being hampered by injuries during his career at Sporting Kansas City, Diego Rubio has shined when he has been at full health. The forward has a knack for finding the back of the net and showed his ability during August for SKC. He has eight goals and six assists in just 781 MLS minutes this season. A truly remarkable return.
16. Walker Zimmerman (D) – LAFC (25)
An offseason move to LAFC has not phased Walker Zimmerman in the very least. The 25-year-old defender has stood out for his new club throughout 2018 and has stepped up to fill the void left by veteran Laurent Ciman. With four goals in his last five matches, Zimmerman is showing the danger he can pose on set pieces. All of this is helping gain the defender attention from European clubs. And rightly so. He has come to be one of the top defenders in the league this year.
