MLS: Top 25 Under-25 Players – 25-21
By Daniel Garza
MLS is stocked full of young, developing talent. Here are the top 25 players aged under 25 currently in the league. We start with numbers 25 – 21.
In the first instalment of the top 25 players under 25 in MLS, we take a look at two up and coming defenders and a D.C. United midfielder who is thriving in the second half of the season.
Here’s who occupies the 25-21 spots.
25. Justen Glad (D) – Real Salt Lake (21)
A consistent performer for Real Salt Lake, Justen Glad has been a huge contributor for the Western Conference club’s push to the playoffs in 2018. The former U-20 U.S. international is a hard-working defender who has plenty of upside for the remainder of his career. This has been a big season for him as he has started and played in 32 league matches for RSL.
24. Auston Trusty (D) – Philadelphia Union (20)
Much like Glad, Auston Trusty has seen plenty of action with his parent club, the Philadephia Union. A Homegrown player, Trusty has improved defensively throughout the course of 2018 and is one to watch for the future. At the age of 20, the center-back has plenty of room to grow at his position. It will be interesting to see how he performs in his first postseason with the Union.
Peru international Yordy Reyna has been a key component of the Vancouver Whitecaps roster over the last two seasons. This year, Reyna has contributed five goals and 11 assists in 24 appearances for the Whitecaps. Reyna is a playmaker who brings a strong presence on the attack.
22. Jesse Gonzalez (GK) – FC Dallas (23)
Stepping into the starting role for FC Dallas has not been an easy task for 23-year-old Jesse Gonzalez. At times, the young goalkeeper has made some poor choices but, with Dallas at the top of the table this year, his effectiveness cannot be discounted. If Gonzalez can continue to develop with his decision making, then he can become one of MLS’ best in no time. Gonzalez has the potential to be a future star and all-star.
21. Paul Arriola (Mid) – D.C. United (23)
An up-and-coming player for the national team, Paul Arriola continues to be a promising prospect for D.C. United also. The midfielder has played a big role in D.C.’s resurgence up the table and has recorded a career-best seven goals this season. Arriola should comfortably move up these rankings next season if he can continue to make plays. At the moment, the midfielder is certainly a contender to be a regular call-up for the United States Men’s National Team.
