4. Bello’s first start

George Bello made his first career start for Atlanta United. At just 16 years old, Bello is the eighth youngest player to make an MLS start in the history of the league. Bello’s start on Saturday night came just three weeks after his debut against D.C. United.

Bello logged 73 minutes and performed well overall. The 16-year-old completed 15 of 20 attempted passes, made four tackles, a defensive block, an interception, a clearance, and three recoveries. Bello looked extremely composed in possession and played beyond his years. There was just one occasion where he failed to mark an RSL attacker, and goal keeper Brad Guzan pulled the Homegrown aside to give some words of advice.

Martino was clearly rotating Saturday night’s squad. It paid off in yet another three points, but it will be interesting to see whether or not Bello sees the pitch again this year. Chances are slim, with Atlanta’s final four matches playing out over a five-week span, meaning rest should not be an issue for Atlanta’s usual starters. If anything, Martino may rest starters if the Supporters’ Shield is clinched quickly. If that happens, Bello may get another opportunity at some meaningful minutes.
