1. Time to start saving the elders

At this point, the club has to admit that there’s nothing left to play for. The Fire are nowhere close to a playoff spot and don’t have to worry about the Wooden Spoon because of how bad San Jose are. All eyes should already be toward next season and the team should already start planning for the future.

This would start with head coach Veljko Paunovic resting the older players until the end of the season. Bastian Schweinsteiger might only be in Chicago for one more year, so it’s crucial he can avoid any injuries in a meaningless game.

Dax McCarty has also had some nagging issues that made him miss games earlier in the year, so he should be allowed as much time off as possible. Even Nemanja Nikolic should be allowed an early vacation and given extra time to spend with his kids and pregnant wife.

We know what to expect out of these players on the pitch, and them being taken out of the team would give fringe players a chance to prove what they’re worth. It’s time to start preparing for next season already.
