2. A final straw for Sanchez

It wasn’t all sunshine and flowers for the Fire, who suffered from the same defensive problems as always. The main cause was Richard Sanchez, who has possibly blown his last chance to be a starter.

There wasn’t much he could do on the first goal, as the keeper had to react quickly to a deflected cross. However, the second goal was much worse and should see him lose the starting job for the final time. New England was on the counter, but the Fire did have players coming back to defend the situation. Sanchez, like usual, panicked and came rushing out of his net. Cristian Penilla saw this, stopped, turned, and hit the ball into an empty net.

Penilla made the keeper look silly and exposed him for his bad decision making. The Fire do have other options on the roster, with Stefan Cleveland doing decently enough whenever a chance. He should be allowed the time to grow before the season is over and potentially keep Sanchez out the team for good.
