MLS: Lionel Messi to Inter Miami in 2020 monumental
By Daniel Garza
Reports have surfaced that Inter Miami owner David Beckham is looking to add Lionel Messi to the roster in 2020. It would be a monumental addition for MLS.
The latest global superstar to be linked to Major League Soccer is none other than the man himself Lionel Messi.
Reports have come out in the last few days stating that David Beckham is interested in acquiring the Barcenola legend for the 2020 season, the year in which his Inter Miami club have earmarked as the season to begin their onslaught on MLS.
This move would help usher in the new club to MLS and likely wouldn’t be the only big-name signing to make the journey to Miami. As such, Messi to Miami is very much possible, however surprising that may seem, especially when you have Beckham running the show.

Messi’s contract with Barcelona runs until the end of the 2020-21 season which would set up this move to occur at a decent time for both parties. Of course, we have to factor in that every single league in the world will be interested in Messi when the time comes for him to move away from Barcelona, if that time does indeed come. But Miami would appear to be a prime destination for Messi to conclude his career if he is ready to wind down a little but still continue playing.
Messi is undoubtedly one of the greatest players to ever play the game and his move to MLS would be a monumental moment in league history. The implications of such an acquisition would be endless on both a business and competitiveness factor on the league as a whole.
There could very well be an influx of talent from younger players from around the world as they set their sights on either playing with or against Messi, and he could singlehandedly make Miami a contender from day one, just as their expansion pioneers have done before them in Los Angeles and Atlanta. As it stands, Inter Miami will no doubt have plenty of players to choose from when the time comes. But if they were to sign Messi, it would only attract more players to Beckham’s endeavours.
In terms of global attention, Messi would be a bigger appeal to the league than any before him. Even when Zlatan Ibrahimovic announced his move earlier this season, it would not stand to the furore and frenzy around a Messi arrival. Fans from around the world would tune in to watch the star, even as he enters the latter years of his career.
Messi joins a growing list of players to be linked to Inter Miami. Cristiano Ronaldo has been seen as a potential future candidate and Antione Grizemann has recently said he would be open to a move to MLS if Beckham wanted him for his club.
There’s no doubt Inter Miami will sign a superstar but the question will remain in the balance for the foreseeable future. Could Messi be that superstar? Time will tell, but it would be utterly monumental if he was.
