Middle of the Road

8-11-6. Previous: 15th. D.C. United. 14. team. 369. D.C. United came out and outplayed Atlanta United. Not many teams can try to go for the jugular against Atlanta but D.C. did and achieved a decisive blow. Rooney, Acosta, and Arriola have found a cohesion that will trouble any of the tops seeds in the East. However, Ben Olsen’s squad are still below the playoff points threshold. They travel to a reeling NYCFC and then host an average at best Minnesota United this week. Olsen can afford to go for wins instead of ties. Three points is better than two, while four might be likely and six is still attainable. D.C. is playing with bravado. Results are expected and the final weeks of the season will have meaning at Audi Field. Rooney has paid for himself already. The rest of the season is all profit.

Ignacio Piatti may have help after all. Saphir Tadier did well playing behind Piatti to not only provide service but provide the support that allowed Piatti to stay in more advanced positions. Montreal is six points clear, sitting in sixth, but has to sweat out the other team’s games in hand. Montreal is leaving it late in the season but may have found some separation after their win against a short-handed NYRB squad.. 11-14-3. Previous: 16th. Montreal Impact. 13. team. 371

374. The Philadelphia Union have made their bones this year by not losing leads. A rare equalizer by Orlando City meant the Union escape the week with seven instead of all nine points. That should sit fine with the fans, as the Union now have a cushion in the playoff race and a goal scorer. Now the wait begins to see if Borek Dockal will be out for more than a week or two.. 12-11-4. Previous: 12th. Philadelphia Union. 12. team

11. team. 375. Everything the Timbers accomplished in rising up the table has been outdone by Seattle. Worse, Portland lost to Seattle recently. To salvage the season, Gio Savarese has to find a way to maintain at least the sixth and final playoff spot. A point away at New England was the bare minimum to maintain the position. The Rapids visit this weekend. In order to be a serious contender, the Timbers needs to leave no doubt as to who is the better team against the Rapids. The remaining schedule only gets tougher.. 11-7-8. Previous: 11th. Portland Timbers
