MLS Transfer Rumor: Bill Hamid coming back to DC?
By Daniel Garza
American goalkeeper Bill Hamid may be headed back to DC United following reports of a possible transfer to MLS. Here’s why it could happen and the consequences of such a move.
DC United are reportedly interested in bringing back longtime goalkeeper Bill Hamid to the ranks from Midtjylland in Denmark.
Hamid left during the winter transfer window and has been a member of Midtjylland for seven months, but has not been the outright number one option for his new club by a long stretch.
With only four appearances for the first team, Hamid has not had a very good start to his footballing life in Denmark. More recently, he was seen playing with the reserve team and was on the bench for two UEFA Champions League qualifying matches. As a result, this is beginning to have an effect on his standing in the United States Men’s National Team pool of goalkeepers.

Midtjylland put a lot into Hamid’s signing as he is under contract through the 2021-22 season. They clearly saw the American goalkeeper as a potential regular starter for their club moving forward. But the evidence suggests otherwise. And even though Hamid just won the Danish league title with Midtjylland, his impact on the club has not been what many had hoped for.
This move wouldn’t be much of a surprise as Hamid is most likely hungry for playing time. He made 200-plus appearances in all competitions during his career at DC and his return home might be just what he needs to jumpstart a resurgence in his form.
One thing to keep in mind is with the USMNT having a host of important friendlies on the horizon, the need for Hamid to impress is becoming increasingly vital. He could be at risk of losing his spot on the depth chart and younger goalkeepers might be given a shot at playing time. If Hamid can get transferred in the next month, his first-team minutes for DC might see his chances of getting selected recover.
On a club level, DC will get back their Homegrown player and have a solid choice for a number-one option in net for the remainder of the season. Hamid may have to shake off the cobwebs of not playing as often, but he should be given the playing time he needs to get back on track.
DC are trying to launch an improbable comeback to reach the postseason and Hamid could be a key component in their resurgence. At 27, Hamid may very well be looking at spending the remainder of playing days in MLS, which makes this an intriguing move on that note.
But the moment came for Hamid to move to Europe in the winter and he took it. No one can blame him for that, but perhaps the time to return has come sooner than many expected.
