The MLS rumbled on over the weekend with a series of thoroughly riveting ties. Zlatan Ibrahimovic marvelled, Josef Martinez led Atlanta United to deny the hottest team in MLS, and FC Dallas tightened their stranglehold on the West with their victory over Sporting KC.

And amid all of this, newly Bayern-bound Alphonso Davies sparkled once more, inspiring his Vancouver Whitecaps to yet another victory and a push for the playoffs.

Bottom of the Barrel

4-12-5. Previous: 22nd. Colorado Rapids. 22. team. 368. Johan Blomberg just can’t keep up with the athletic midfields in MLS, and his passing range makes him even more of a liability. Acosta had a great goal, but needs a better striker in front of him than Jack Price. Tim Howard is slow to the jump, and the backline cannot hold on for seven minutes to earn a point. With Badji gone, Gashi and Boli need to earn their high wages. Hudson needs to give Serna some more playing time, in a lineup featuring players in their proper positions.

327. Those early comeback wins are now being reversed for Orlando City. The early wins keep the Lions in the playoff chase, mathematically. The boys at Reddit have spreadsheets showing Orlando City is a mess of a team with no set starting eleven. James O’Connor needs to get the team’s hierarchy and lineups sorted. The Lions are only a couple wins away from that elusive playoff spot, and only a couple more exciting losses away from a wasted season. With Spector, Kjestan, Dwyer, Yotun, Meram, and Higuain the Lions have a top-end roster. But the failure to find a proper manager may cost them another season.. 7-13-1. Previous: 20th. Orlando City SC. 21. team

Previous: 15th. Montreal Impact. 18. team. 371. Four games in the last 12 days, with a tough loss in the Canadian Cup, was bound to catch up with Montreal. The Impact’s home winning streak is over, thanks to Josef Martinez and Atlanta’s scorching road record. Montreal created chances but, as is usually the case, only Piatti converted one into a goal. The Impact are tough in the spaces between midfield and defense, however, without more attacking end result from players not named Ignacio, the Impact will have little in the playoffs.. 9-13-1

16. team. 377. Toronto is showing signs of life, mostly against Chicago. A few decent results have given the Reds hope of defending their MLS Cup trophy, but will be coming out of the MLS All-Star ‘break’ facing Atlanta United, their heir apparent. Those reserve team games to start the season put Toronto FC in a big hole. The injuries lately only served to prolong the position below the playoff line. Jozy, Bradley and Gio are coming back into the fold, however, with help incoming. If they squeak into the playoffs, the looming series against Atlanta or NYCFC will be much tougher than the recent games against the Fire.. 6-11-4. Previous: 17th. Toronto FC
