USMNT and USWNT abroad: Goals galore in entertaining week

There was a glut of goals for American players abroad this week in what was a riveting few days of soccer. Here is the week that was for USMNT and USWNT players overseas.

Scoring was seemingly the name of the game this week for American players abroad, including a goal by Tijuana midfielder Rubio Rubin, rounding the goalkeeper in a neat finish for the USMNT prospect’s first goal in Liga MX.

We begin this week, however, with Andrija Novakovich, who was on the scoresheet for Telestar mid-week.

The forward produces a fine finish for his 20th goal in 33 appearances. Telestar went on to win 3-2. During the weekend, Novakovich also played 90 minutes in a 1-0 victory over Utrecht.

In England, DeAndre Yedlin registered an assist for Newcastle United during their massive 2-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday.

Rubin scored his first goal for Tijuana on Friday scoring in the 84th minute. They defeated CONCACAF Champions League finalist Guadalajara 3-0.

Mix Diskerud had been taking full advantage of his playing time in Sweden, he scored two goals during the week to increase his season total to four goals in four matches in all competitions.

Diskerud’s first goal came against Hammarby and the second goal was against Östersunds FK.

Omar Gonazlez recorded an assist for Pachuca in their 3-1 victory over Santos Laguna in Liga MX. He fed the ball to Keisuke Honda who scored a must-see goal.

Romain Gall picked up an assist for Sundsvall against Malmo, that match ended in a 2-2 draw in the Allsvenskan.

How the rest fared

  • Weston McKennie was brought on as a substitute during Schalke’s 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund. Christian Pulisic also featured in this match. He played all 90 minutes for Dortmund.

  • Julian Green played 63 minutes for Greuther Fuerth against Jahn Regensburg in a 2-1 defeat. Both goals were scored by Jann-Christopher George who is eligible to play for the United States.
  • Geoff Cameron was a substitute for Stoke City entering in the 62nd minute.
  • Bill Hamid got his first start in net for FC Midtjylland against Hobro in the Danish Cup quarterfinal. Facing him was Emmanuel Sabbi who played 63 minutes in the match. Midtjyllan won 2-1 in extra time to advance to the semi-finals.
  • Timothy Chandler entered in the 71st minute for Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.
  • William Yarbrough played all 90 minutes in net for Leon in a 2-1 win over Veracruz.
  • Terrance Boyd went 83 minutes for Darmstadt in a 1-1 draw with Braunschweig.
