All three points against the Seattle Sounders was not expected but the Montreal Impact came away with a massive result on the road.

The 10-men Sounders were unable to hold off the Montreal Impact who had a man advantage for over 50 minutes. Kevin Leerdam was sent off in the 40th minute after video review. Replay showed the defender appear to give Daniel Lovitz a slight slap. It may have been a harsh call to give a red but nonetheless, it changed the rhythm of the match.

Jeisson Vargas would score what proved to be the match winner in the 60th minute after Ignacio Piatti cut through the Seattle backline to set the Chilean up.

Evan Bush picked up his first shutout of the season making four saves in net.

Here are three quick takeaways from the Montreal Impact’s win.

3. Vargas on form

Vargas has scored both match-winning goals for the Impact in their last two matches. His winner against Toronto was a massive goal for a massive three points and he followed suit with the same result on Saturday night.

He is proving to be the biggest addition to the Impact from the offseason. Has the Impact found a solution to their goal-scoring woes?

2. Not great, but good enough

This wasn’t a great performance by Montreal overall. They let the Sounders hang around in the second half and were outshot 12 to 8. As the backline continues to take shape they will undoubtedly continue to be growing pains.

One thing to remember is as Alejandro Silva gets more playing time the Impact midfield should get an upgrade in the coming weeks. He only came on as a substitute in the 80th minute and once he makes the move to the starting XI the midfield should see more creativity.

All-in-all, getting three points in Seattle is no easy task and the Impact picked up a huge result that has them sitting well four matches into the season. This was potentially a dangerous opening month for Montreal as the opening two weeks gave a glimpse of what could have been four consecutive losses to begin the season.

1. Piatti leads

The Argentine continues to set up the Impact for goals. He assisted on Vargas’ winner against Toronto and did the same against Seattle. In total, he has been involved in four of the five goals scored by the Impact in 2018 thus far.

He has silently been one of the best players in MLS this month. It’s safe to say without Piatti the Impact would be in trouble at the moment.
