The USMNT will play their lone friendly of the international break against Paraguay on Tuesday night. Here is all you need to know.

The reset on the USMNT’s future continues as the next crop of players gets their chance to show what they have. It will be a very young lineup that takes to the pitch against Paraguay with 17 players under the age of 24 on the roster.

Despite the young age, the team sheet is full of talent that is playing at a very high level across the globe. Players such as Weston McKennie and Kenny Saief will look to impress in what has been a stellar season for these two players and many others in Europe.

Other notable players include Paris Saint-Germain’s Tim Weah and the in-form striker Andrija Novakovich of Telestar. Weah recorded a hat-trick against Paraguay just five months ago at the U-17 World Cup, which included this sublime finish.

Some of the more familiar faces that have already represented the U.S. numerous times are DeAndre Yedlin, Bobby Wood, and Eric Lichaj.

In goal, the U.S. is still in search of the next goalkeeper that can lead the team on a consistent basis. With a total of three goalkeepers selected, the position is certainly up for grabs and will be a position battle to watch in this match.

With the USMNT out of the World Cup this year the experiment of who will be next in line to lead the team in the 2022 qualifying will be the continued storyline. Each of these players on the roster is a legitimate contender for a spot on any future USMNT team sheet. Although this is only a friendly match, each player has to know this match will be part of a larger evaluation moving forward.

Paraguay in need of a win

As for their opponent, Paraguay is a perfect team for the U.S.  to face on this particular international break. Their roster is primarily comprised of veteran players, compared to the USMNT, who will certainly test the young Americans chemistry. One familiar face on Paraguay’s selected team is Atlanta United’s Miguel Almiron. The Major League Soccer star is sure to be a test for the backline and midfield alike.

Paraguay, like the U.S., failed to advance to the World Cup finals and will be playing their first match since the disappointing finish to qualifying. With only five wins coming in 2016 as a whole, a win would do Paraguay good as they look to start 2017 off much better than it ended.

Tuesday night will mark the eighth meeting between these two countries, the U.S. has the advantage in the series with a 3-2-2 record against Paraguay. In their last meeting in 2016, the USMNT won 1-0 in the Copa America.
