USMNT abroad: Johannsson scores, Weah makes debut, and more

The present and future of the USMNT was well-represented around the globe this week. Here are the highlights of our Americans abroad.

It was one of the best showings of the European season for American and USMNT players around the world. Aron Johannsson and Andrija Novakovich were two of the players that highlighted the week that was.

Johannsson scored his first Bundesliga goal of the 2017-18 season against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday night. The match would end in a 2-2 draw as Johannsson’s goal proved to be the cruical equalizer.

The striker now has two goals in his last five appearances in all competition for Werder Bremen.

In the Netherlands, Novakovich recorded a brace for Telestar as the striker on loan from Reading helped his side to a 3-2 victory. He has scored eight goals in his last nine appearances.

Weah makes debut

Future USMNT star Timothy Weah made his senior team debut for Paris Saint-Germain in a Ligue 1 on Saturday. The midfielder played 11 minutes in a 2-0 win against Troyes.

Another young American player had a fine showing as Jonathan Klinsmann earned a clean sheet for Hertha Berlin II in 4-0 win over Oberlausitz Neugersdorf.

Other notable performances

  • Christian Pulisic was featured off the bench for Borussia Dortmund this weekend. He entered late in the match in the 88th minute. Dortmund drew with RB Leipzig 1-1 in a top of the table clash.
  • Timmy Chandler went 90 minutes for Eintracht Frankfurt’s 1-0 shutout win over Hanover.
  • Kenny Saief had an assist for RSC Anderlecht in their 3-2 win on Sunday. Saief has four points in his last seven appearances.
  • Weston McKennie returned from injury as he made an appearance off the bench for Schalke.
  • Matt Miazga played all 90 minutes of Vitesse’s massive win over Ajax in the Dutch Eredivisie.
  • Tim Ream played all 90 minutes in Fulham’s 2-1 win over Derby County. Fulham are eyeing promotion as they sit fourth in the EFL Championship table.
  • Geoff Cameron played all 90 minutes for Stoke City in their 0-0 draw with Southampton in the Premier League.
  • DeAndre Yedlin started and played all 90 minutes for Newcastle United as they fell to Liverpool 2-0.
  • Julian Green played 84 minutes for Greuther Fuerth in their 2-0  victory over Nurnberg.
  • In Liga MX, Wiliam Yarborough had a clean sheet for Leon and Landon Donovan entered as a substitute in the 84th minute.
  • Joe Corona came on in the 81st minute for Club America against Chivas.
  • Jorge Villafana played all 90 minutes of Santos Laguna’s 2-1 victory over Necaxa.
  • Alejandro Guido made an appearance for Club Tijuana entering in the 58th minute against Lobos. Rubin Rubio also was a substitute in this match, he came on in the 73rd minute.
  • Erik Palmer-Brown made his debut for KV Kortjik in the Jupiler Pro League. Kortjik fell 2-1 to league leaders Club Brugge.
  • Lastly, Joe Gyau scored in the 3 Liga in Germany for SG Sonnenhof Großaspach.
